Love during Counterrevolution

We sat next to the Nile River

awaiting for the sun to set

and the breeze to let out a sigh

We sat on the limestone rock

interdigitating our fingers

and watching the pneumatic feluka1 go by

We touched each other’s lips

and listened to shabi2 music

which imbricated the pentatonic scale

We touched each other’s ears

for the knell of the martyrs

rang like a sardonic gale

1 feluka=a type of Egyptian boat typcically found on the Nile River

2 shabi=popular music in Egypt
